Baking mixes are quick and easy to make, plus they make a great Christmas gift! Just layer everything in a jar and add a personalized tag with instructions. Your friends and family will love this delicious homemade gingerbread!

What you need for the gingerbread baking mix

This is how the homemade baking mix works: Add only the dry ingredients for the gingerbread into a clear glass jar. The receiver will add the remaining ingredients before baking.

For the baking mix you'll need:

  • 250 g flour
  • 100 g sugar (white or brown)
  • 50 g ground hazelnuts (or almonds) 
  • 1 tsp baking cocoa
  • 1 tsp chocolate flakes
  • 1 tsp baking powder 
  • 1 tsp gingerbread spice 
  • ½ tsp cinnamon powder
  • empty screw-top or hinged glass jar with a capacity of approx. 650 ml

If you don't have any gingerbread spice on hand, you can easily make it yourself as well:

For approx. 4 tsp. gingerbread spice mix you‘ll need:

  • 2 level tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 level teaspoon cloves
  • 0.5 tsp cardamom
  • 0.5 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.5 tsp anise

Mix well and you're done!

Make your own baking mix – this is how it works

Fill the ingredients one after the other into the jar, so that the individual layers are clearly visible from the outside. It works especially well with an evenly round jar without a bottle neck. Press each layer down slightly before you add the next one. If you don't have a funnel at home, you can use a rolled-up paper or an envelope with the corner cut off.

If you still have some space at the top of the jar after adding all the ingredients, you can fill it up with chocolate shavings, chopped nuts, oatmeal or raisins. The jar should be filled all the way to the brim so that the ingredients can't slide around and mix.

Baking instructions

As mentioned in the introduction, the baking mix contains only the dry ingredients for the gingerbread. It is therefore advisable to include baking instructions with the baking mix. This way, the recipient knows exactly which ingredients are still needed and how to prepare the gingerbread.

Add the following ingredients to the baking mix: 

  • 100 g margarine 
  • 2 eggs
  • 350 ml milk 

How to make the gingerbread: 

Add the baking mix and additional ingredients to a bowl. Mix well until smooth.

Pour batter into a baking pan lined with baking paper and bake at 175 °C for about 40 to 45 minutes. Remove finished cake from the oven, allow to cool slightly and sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired. Cut into pieces and serve.
